What to do in Mackay

The Mackay region has so much to offer, whether you’re here for a beach break or flying visit. In comparison to densely populated tourist areas further up north, this section of Australia’s coastline is largely untouched, which has preserved both its natural beauty and spirit. Ibis Mackay is the perfect place to base your stay, just a 3-minute walk from the airport and with free guest parking, all your transport needs are covered.

Explore Eungella National Park

Just an hour west of Mackay is this stunning national park, lined with rainforest-clad mountains showcasing exactly why it deserves the Aboriginal name Eungella (YUNG-gel-la) which translates to “land of the cloud”. This is one of Queensland’s most ecologically diverse parks with an abundance of wildlife and plant species to see. The highlight for most visitors is the opportunity to view Platypus in their natural habit, a rarity nationwide. This shy creature can often be seen from Broken River’s viewing platform, with sunrise and sunset known amongst locals as optimum viewing time.

Visit Mackay Marina

Home to everything from catamarans to sail boats, this is the only marina in Queensland to qualify for fish friendly status. Take a walk along the breakwater wall for stunning views and spot the tropical islands on the horizon. We highly recommend sticking around here for sunset here, it doesn’t get better. With an array of restaurants on offer, why not enjoy some local seafood and an ice-cold beer with friends whilst you wait for the sun to go down.

Swim at Blue Water Lagoon

Blue water lagoon is a staple for all locals during the summer months, but especially for families on the lookout for a safe, stinger-free swimming environment. The whole site is the equivalent to three 50m swimming pools and features waterfalls, slides and an interactive children’s area. Oh, and did we mention entry is FREE? Located right in the heart of Mackay’s city centre, this really is the perfect activity. Just be sure to check the official website for opening times as external factors can affect typical operations.

Shop ‘Till You Drop

Whether you’re looking to super splurge or for a budget bargain, Caneland Central has something to offer everyone. With over 180 stores to choose from, shoppers are bound to be delighted by their options. Featuring the likes of Big W, Myer and JB Hi-Fi it’s no wonder those in surrounding areas travel to enjoy a day out here. You can keep the whole family happy too with a vibrant food court to refuel in and entertainment from the likes of Timezone Arcade. The centre is open 7 days a week, just check opening hours before heading over.

Experience Cape Hillsborough

This national park just a short drive from Mackay is where rainforest meets ocean. Lined with stunning scenery, native wildlife and various walking tracks. Before sunrise each morning head down to the beach where you’ll find an abundance of friendly Kangaroos and Wallabies feasting along the water’s edge. You may have to wake early, but we promise you – it’s worth it! A truly bucket list experience.

Sample Local Eateries

When visiting a new place it’s a rite of passage to enjoy the local cuisine. TurBARlence offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as an out of hour’s service to ensure you needs are always catered to.
